Product Notes

Album Description: Carnatic Saxophone Classics is a double disc compilation of popular South Indian Classical pieces spanning 500 years of Carnatic composers. The album's featured artist, Dr. Sumanth Swaminathan, displays a unique instrumental style that is colored by his two gurus: saxophone vidwan, Padmashree Dr. Kadri Gopalnath and vocal vidwan Sri T. N. Bala. Supporting artists Srikant Venkatraman (Violin) and Vijay Ganesh (Mridangam) provide a world class accompaniment reflective of their decorated musical careers. The album is presented in the format of a South Indian kutcheri, replete with tonal and rhythmic improvisation on a variety of ragas. The signature piece, split into two tracks entitled "Raga Alapana - Kapi" and "Intha Sowkhyamani", displays most of the major improvisational forms in carnatic music (including alapana, neraval, and swara). Artist Bio: Dr. Sumanth Swaminathan started training in vocal Carnatic Music at the age of 8 from Sri T.N. Bala in the Philadelphia area. At the age of 14, he was initiated into Carnatic music on the saxophone during a visit by Padmashri Dr. Kadri Gopalnath. Sumanth subsequently trained under the renowned saxophone master during his summer visits to India, while continuing to study under Sri. T.N. Bala. Sumanth has performed with Dr. Gopalnath at concerts at the Mukambika temple in Mangalore in 2001, the Silver Jubilee celebrations of CMANA in 2002, and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia in 2003. For the past three years, Sumanth has been a highly sought after solo artist for Kutcheris, wedding concerts, and dance productions across the United States. Sumanth has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a Ph.D in applied mathematics. He is a research scientist and a carnatic saxophone teacher in the greater Chicago and Milwaukee areas.
