Product Notes

Madrid-born Sarah McQuaid was raised in Chicago, studied philosophy in France and spent many years in Ireland before pitching up in Penzance, Cornwall, in 2007. Drawing on the traditions of Ireland, America and the UK, her music is sublime and compelling, characterised by warm, velvety vocals and a distinctive acoustic guitar style. Just in time for Sarah's first American tour comes this double-CD release, bringing together her first two solo CDs, When Two Lovers Meet and I Won't Go Home 'Til Morning. When Two Lovers Meet was originally released in 1997. Combining traditional tunes and songs with one original number, the album drew highly favourable reviews: "Boy, hasn't Sarah got a good voice - rich, deep, mature," Irish Music Magazine enthused, while The Irish Times called her "an accomplished guitarist" and the album "a debut to note"; Hot Press cited "a warm, velvet-tinged voice and a distinctive acoustic guitar style which mark her out as a significant talent" and the Rough Guide To Irish Music wrote: "Sarah's voice is both as warm as a turf fire and as rich as matured cognac.... An astonishing debut by a unique talent." Despite the critical acclaim, a ten-year break from the music business followed. The follow-up, when it finally appeared in 2008, marked a distinct change of focus. I Won't Go Home 'Til Morning is an enchanting celebration of old-time Appalachian folk, with Sarah's arrangements punctuated by her own fine compositions and a cover of Bobbie Gentry's classic 'Ode to Billie Joe'. Once again, the critics waxed lyrical. "Sparkling guitar and compelling alto voice ... reminiscent of Pentangle's best efforts ... a gentle and magical recording that I will return to time and again," wrote Sing Out!; folk website Spiral Earth described McQuaid's singing as "shades of Baez minus the operatic warble and Gillian Welch without so much Nashville twang," and Living Tradition summed it up as "Some of the loveliest songs you'll hear all year ... Sarah McQuaid has poured her heart into this record - but it's also firmly attached to her sleeve and this is Folk music in every sense. It's that good." Sarah is also the author of a highly regarded guitar tutor, The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book.
