Product Notes

'On The Road To An Open Heart' is a joyous, fun filled musical journey of the soul - my soul ! The songs for this journey began in 2000, in Marquette Michigan, when I found a tape by Thich Nhat Hanh, and I began meditating. While discovering and learning to listen to the voice of my soul, I also began seeing more clearly the beauty around me as I became immersed in the present moment. My songwriting began to reflect these powerful images of everyday life and people that too often went unnoticed by my hurried mind. I spent the next ten years writing, meditating and hiking in the mountains of Colorado while recovering from an injury that made it painful for me to play guitar. And because I could no longer play professionally, I began teaching children of all ages. Romantic love creates a desire in me to open my heart, but it's the children who have taught me how. Their laughter and joy, along with my love for nature, is woven into the fabric of many of these songs. It took me over three years to record the project at an amazing studio in Denver called, 'Colorado Sound.' Kevin Clock, the owner of the studio, and I produced the album with a focus on having fun while creating and exploring a variety of sounds, many of which I enjoyed in my childhood. Kevin Clock has thirty years experience recording music. He recorded Stevie Ray Vaughn, 'Live At Red Rocks' ! He has platinum and gold records hanging on the wall in his studio! Kevin brought a treasure chest of ideas, equipment and experience to this project, along with a wise heart and open mind eager to create and have fun! Kevin Clock was instrumental in bringing in many of the most talented people in Boulder and Denver. It was his brilliant idea to bring in a very talented harmony singer named Mark Oblinger. Mark sang with the band 'FireFall'. His voice adds a richness and depth to the songs that gets me smiling every time I listen. Initially, Kevin and I thought we'd have Mark sing on only a couple songs, and we'd have other background vocalist to add variety to the CD. But Mark is special! His golden, clear voice, along with his creativity and passion for the songs was transforming, and soon we found we had Mark on 9 of the songs. Mark is currently producing a television show called, 'The Big Green Rabbit.' It was Mark's idea to invite Richie Furay to sing on the title track. Richie was the founding member of Buffalo Springfield and Poco and is a member of the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. Richie is as talented as he is humble and as hard working as he is generous! I had a lot of fun in the studio that night watching these two old friends. Mark and Richie, create a magical swirl of harmonies that give 'On The Road To An Open Heart' the playfulness and depth that comes with such a journey! Kevin also suggested we get John Magnie to play accordion on five tracks. John's accordion adds a playful Neapolitan feel to the song, 'You Have A Way,' and on 'Hey Girl' he takes me back home to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where as a boy I would listen to my cousin Bobby play accordion with the 'Whitens' Brothers Band.' Check John out with his band, 'The Subdudes,' for some cool Cajun Blues! Both Mark and Kevin highly recommended the gentle, pure voice of singer songwriter Celeste Krenz. Celeste's voice is like a soft hand woven quilt, pieced together with a rich life of experiences, by a heart open to the joys and pains of love, life and motherhood. She adds a nurturing and inviting beauty to the song, 'Mother's Day.' Check her out on youtube or at High Horse Records singing one of my favorites, 'Dakota Wind.' Tom Capek of the Denver based jazz band, 'Dotsero' added rich colors and character with B3, Whirlitzer, and Synth. I cried the first time I listened to the part he created for 'Mother's Day.' Tom took the time to listen and connect with these songs and added his heart along with his incredible talent to create parts that supported and brought to life these story's. I'm honored to have worked with him. I had an amazing rhythm section with Dan Nelson on Bass, Christian Teele on drums and percussion and Scott Bown also on drums. Christian Teele plays in the E-Town band, a live radio broadcast out of Boulder featuring Nick Forester. Wayne Hammerstadt's electric guitar beautifully captures the imagery on 'Sunshine Smile' and 'That Cool' and teamed up with Mike Buckelew on 'Leather Chaps' they make Janie's Harley come alive. Jerry Kippola from Marquette Michigan added a raunchy, powerful Lap Steal guitar, reminiscent of David Lindley on the title track. Ernie Martinez plays the beautiful Dobro lead you hear on 'Mother's Day.' The Neapolitan style mandolin on 'You Have A Way' was played by Grammy nominee Ben Winship. The horn section part on 'Go Your Way No More' was created by Kevin Clock and Tom Capek and it was scored by Bob Rebholz and masterfully performed by Bob Rebholz on sax, Pete Olstad on trumpet and Nelson Hinds on trombone. Christin Grant and Carnita Harris blew into the studio like a cool breeze on a warm summers day to add rich, colorful harmonies on 'Leather Chaps' and 'That Cool' And on the bridge in 'Sunshine Smile' my cousin Jalaine Bellmore adds a sweet, beckoning harmony... as though the trees of the forest were singing along. The soothing synth part on 'Be The Change' was played by the assistant engineer Jesse O'Brien. This journey has been a long one, and although the recording is finished, I still have much more to learn on my road to an open heart!
